The global World Wide Web could not function properly if a particular computer could not be easily identified. For computers, this unique 'network identifier’ is the IP address, which is unique to each computer. However, while computers can easily identify each other using only strings of numbers (which is what an IP address is), it would be extremely complicated for humans to use this method.

A simple and effective solution to this problem has been developed – domain names are typed in letter form and then 'translated’ by DNS (Domain Name System) servers into a form that computers can understand.

What is an Internet domain?

Put simply, an Internet domain is a literal representation of the IP address at which a particular service (usually a website) is available on the Internet. Each domain has a specific structure that includes a main name and an extension. The main name is the part that is unique to each website and is therefore one of the most important components of the URL where your website can be found on the global web. The simpler and more memorable the main name, the easier it will be for internet users to remember. This in turn will have a direct impact on the number of visits to your website. For this reason alone, it is worth investing time and effort in choosing a good domain name. However, it is not just the name itself that is important – in many cases, the extension you choose is also important. It is important to note that the pool of available extensions is set from the top down, although it covers a really wide range of possibilities. There are two main groups of top-level extensions:

Domain registration

Registering a domain is actually a very straightforward process, but there are some important things to keep in mind to avoid potential problems or costs in the future. This is particularly important for companies with an established, strong market position and for people for whom image issues, for example, are very important (actors, journalists, politicians, etc.). So what should you keep in mind? First and foremost, it is a good idea to register domains for a given principal name with at least several different extensions – the most common being .pl, .com and .eu. Why should you do this? The answer is simple: to prevent the domain from being taken over by someone who wants to make money at a later date (when the company becomes profitable or the person becomes popular) by reselling us a domain with an extension we have not chosen. The prices demanded by domainers for such a domain often reach many thousands of zlotys. There is another possibility – that the domain will be bought by a competitor who will use this address to carry out activities aimed at damaging the image of a business rival or a certain public figure. A common practice to prevent these scenarios is for companies to buy domain packages with multiple extensions and then set up redirects from them to a single main web address. This also indirectly increases traffic to the target site.

Possibility to register various domains

Registering a web domain with Servizza involves checking availability (i.e. which extensions can be chosen for a particular root name), selecting a domain package and paying for the options you want. The domain check is instantaneous, so you’ll know immediately which extensions are available for a particular root name and which are not. We also strongly recommend that you read the terms and conditions of each service – in our case, all the information is provided in an accessible, understandable form, with no tricks or small print. Why do we mention this? Because we know from experience that there is no such thing as a free domain: if someone offers a domain for free for a year, it is more than certain that renewing such a domain after the free period will be expensive.
